The Woman Who Gave Me the Finger

A woman in her 50s giving a man the finger from her car as she drives by.

Been there myself, with my mind aflurry and coming to a little bit off the track

Two cats and a dog
Watch with me
through the screen door
Birds flitting around the feeder

A cat scurries from a passerby
A baby’s cry fades

The wind swirls leaves
In cohort with the sparrows
Among the acorns
and hand-thrown seeds

As I watch the birds
A car pulls to the corner
to linger
A woman watching me
watching the birds,
In my line of vision

With grotesque derision,
She yells,
“What the fuck you staring at!!!”
And to enunciate her words
Gives me the finger

Love the poem, very relatable. And to add to Art Hernandez’s comment below, people can be so . . . expressive . . . and not always in a nice way.
